GTA 6 file size and storage
Rockstar has not announced the GTA 6 download size yet. What is certain: it will be one of the biggest games on your console. Here is how much space you really have and how to make room before preloading starts on November 10.
How much space your console really has
The advertised size is not what you get, because the system software takes a share.
PS5 (original) 825 GB, about 667 GB usable · PS5 Slim 1 TB, about 848 GB usable · PS5 Pro 2 TB, about 1.8 TB usable · Xbox Series X 1 TB, about 802 GB usable · Xbox Series S 512 GB, about 364 GB usable (a 1 TB Series S model also exists).
Do not trust leaked file sizes
Numbers floating around social media are guesses until PlayStation or Xbox store pages show the official size, which usually happens around preload time. We will post the confirmed size here the moment it appears.
Adding storage on PS5
Every PS5 has a slot for an extra M.2 NVMe SSD. Sony recommends a PCIe Gen4 drive with read speeds of at least 5,500 MB/s and a heatsink. Games installed there run exactly like on the internal drive. A USB drive can store PS5 games but cannot play them, so it is only useful for moving other games out of the way.
Adding storage on Xbox Series X|S
Xbox uses a dedicated Storage Expansion Card that plugs into the back. Games run from it at full speed. Like on PS5, a regular USB drive can hold Series X|S games but cannot run them, while older Xbox One games can still be played from USB. See our launch gear guide for drive picks.
How to free up space quickly
Delete games you have finished, remove captured videos (they get large fast), and on PS5 check Settings > Storage for leftover data. On Xbox, Manage storage shows exactly what uses the most room. Do it before November 10 so the preload does not stall.

How big is GTA 6?
Not confirmed. Expect one of the largest console downloads ever; the official size appears on store pages around preload time.
Can I play GTA 6 from an external hard drive?
No. On PS5 it must run from internal storage or an M.2 SSD; on Xbox from internal storage or an Expansion Card.
Is 1 TB enough for GTA 6?
For GTA 6 itself, almost certainly, but with other big games installed you may need to delete some.
